The records belonged to Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Tom Hanks, Sharon Osbourne, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Barbara Walters, Anne Rice, Elizabeth Banks and Leonardo DiCaprio.

A former UCLA School of Medicine researcher was sentenced to four months in federal prison for illegally snooping into the confidential private records of celebrities, high-profile patients and co-workers.

48 year old Huping Zhou pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles in January to four misdemeanor counts of violating federal privacy provisions.

Zhou was also ordered to pay $2,000 in fines.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony Montero said Zhou looked at the private medical records after being notified he was being fired for his job performance in 2003.

“The nature and circumstances of this offense are quite egregious,” U.S. Magistrate Judge Andrew J. Wistrich said before imposing sentence.

Zhou, who previously worked as a surgeon in his native China, was accused of accessing UCLA patient records more than 300 times, mostly involving celebrities, over a three-week period, Montero said.

Those whose records he accessed include Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Tom Hanks, Sharon Osbourne, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Barbara Walters, Anne Rice, Elizabeth Banks and Leonardo DiCaprio, according to sentencing papers filed in Los Angeles federal court.

He did not attempt to sell any of the information, Montero said.

“His motive was to get back at UCLA,” the prosecutor said.

Along with the prison term and fine, Wistrich ordered Zhou to serve one year of supervised release following his release from jail, at which time he must undergo mental health counseling.

Zhou is a Chinese citizen in the U.S. on a work visa, but will not be deported because the violations were misdemeanors, Montero said.

The sentence “sends a strong message that if you’re going to access patient records without a lawful reason, there will be definite jail time,” Montero said outside court.

Drew Barrymore has a long record of championing LGBT equality. Professionally and personally, the actress has embraced the gay and lesbien community both on and offscreen.

In her film “Boys on the Side,” directed by Don Roos, the central themes were lesbianism and AIDS. “That film was 15 years ago, and it was not common for a high-profile actress to be in a wide-release movie about lesbians,” says Jarrett Barrios. “To be part of that, particularly on the real upswing of her early career, says something about Barrymore’s commitment and how fearless she is in her support of the gay and lesbian community.”

In 2009, Barrymore essayed the role of a straight reporter at an LGBT newspaper in the film “He’s Just Not That Into You,” and in “Everybody’s Fine” she played the lesbian daughter of widower Robert De Niro.

Barrymore is this year’s recipient of the Vanguard Award, which is given to people who have increased the visibility of the LGBT community. The actress says it is no big deal.

“I was born, bred and raised amongst diversity,” Barrymore said. “It has defined me and made me the person I am today.”

When California’s Prop. 8 came up for a vote in 2008, Barrymore took it personally as she joined the thousands of protesters in the streets of West Hollywood and Silverlake. “I am who I am because of the people who influenced me growing up, and many of them were gay,” Barrymore said. “No one has the right to tell anyone what makes a family … this is something that means everything to me.”

The actress donned a high-necked green dress to the 2006 Golden Globes and admits it was a huge fashion faux-pas as it made her breasts look too big and unsupported.

She said: “My worst red carpet moment is the Gucci green dress where my boobs look like watermelons, it’s the worst. Never wear a high neck dress with a high belt. It makes your t*ts look like they are at your waist. It was the Golden Globes. I felt so bad. I was like, ‘I’m so sorry, Gucci. I have tarnished your name.”

Although the 35-year-old star admits to making fashion mistakes in the past, Drew says she’s happy with the way she looks and recently vowed never to have plastic surgery.

She said: “F**k surgery! I’m so curious as to what’s going to happen naturally that I can’t imagine wanting to alter things just yet.

“And to all those women putting botulism in their faces – we don’t know what the long-term effects are, so stop! I’d rather look like a basset hound than do that to my face!”

The ‘Whip It’ star – who is rumoured to be engaged to actor Justin Long – says she could never pretend to be someone she’s not and needs a man to accept her for who she really is.

She told Britain’s OK! magazine: “On the first date, don’t not be yourself. Don’t sell them what you’re not really about – it’s exhausting.

“I’m never not myself and I don’t give a s**t if it’s to my detriment or not. This is who I am. What you see is what you get. I learnt that lesson when I was 13 – my entire life was out there and I didn’t have a choice. I thought, let me just ride with this wave.”

As well as not changing for a man, Drew recently claimed isn’t bothered about getting older.

The 34-year-old actress – who shot to fame aged six in ‘E.T’ – said: “It’s the best time of my life – it’s not traumatic at all. I don’t think I’ve ever been happier. It’s like the older I get, the better I get. Gravity and wrinkles are fine with me. They’re a small price to pay for the new wisdom inside my head and my heart.

“If my breasts fall down to the floor and everything starts to sag and becomes hideous and gross, I won’t worry. I’ll just stop appearing in front of the camera. That’s fine with me because I love producing and directing.”
