Barrymore made her directorial debut in 2009 with the film Whip It. Unfortunately it didn’t whip up much business at the box office, earning only $17 million globally. Still, Barrymore is working hard to extend her career behind the camera. She was the executive producer on the successful film He’s Just Not That Into You.

Actress Kristen Bell is seeking to join the cast of the upcoming Drew Barrymore film “Everybody Loves Whales.” The film is being produced by Universal and the current name is a working title. The film is based upon the nonfiction novel “Freeing the Whales: How the Media Created the World’s Greatest Non-Event” which was written by Tom Rose.

The film follows the true story of a small-town reporter and a Greenpeace volunteer who team up to try and save three gray whales trapped under the ice of the Arctic Circle. Set in the 1988 during the Cold War, the pair enlists the help of both the world’s superpowers to help them free the trapped whales. Barrymore and John Krasinski, who developed the project together, will play the role of the small-town reporter and Greenpeace volunteer respectively. Bell will play the role of a Los Angeles news reporter who thinks her best asset is her looks.

Bell most recently appeared in “When in Rome” and will next appear in the Disney comedy “You Again,” which hits theaters in September.

Alaskans will be cast in Drew Barrymore’s new movie, which is shooting in the state.

The movie will mostly be shot in Anchorage, Alaska. Executive producer Stuart Besser said, “There’s at least 1,000 extras, and there are probably 30 to 40 speaking roles that we would attempt to get in Anchorage.”

Everybody Loves Whales will start shooting in September in Alaska. It is expected to shoot for about 10 weeks. It is based on the attempt to rescue three gray whales trapped by sea ice near Barrow in 1988. Two of the whales managed to escape thanks to a Soviet icebreaker, while the third disappeared.

Barrymore will star as a Greenpace worker and The Office star John Krasinski will star as a news reporter. Ken Kwapis is directing.

The movie is expected to have a 2012 release date.
