Drew Barrymore has declared she packs a mean punch. The Charlie’s Angels star has spoken about her passion for boxing, saying she turned to the sport to help her get fit. “I went to a boxing class because I needed the exercise but I’m not athletic but unco-ordinated and lame,” the 35-year-old said. Barrymore, who made her directorial debut with 2009’s Whip It, enjoyed her new workout. “However, I found it so much fun. I’d never boxed before but I was beating the crap out of the punch bag. I was so into it,” The Express reports her as saying. Source: Monsters & Critics |

Drew Barrymore was offered $1,000 for her Mickey Mouse T-shirt by a fan of the cartoon character. The Hollywood star was enjoying a relaxed lunch with friends at exclusive club Soho House in Los Angeles when the man spotted her wearing the vintage top. He immediately approached, and offered Drew the phenomenal sum. She initially thought he was joking, but when the gent continued to badger her about the flimsy T-shirt Drew explained she had no intention of parting with it. “She said she’d had it for years and it was one of her favourites,” a source revealed. The man explained he was a collector of Mickey Mouse memorabilia, which was why he was so keen to get his hands on the apparel. He then scrabbled around in his bag and pulled out a cheque book, at which point Drew felt she had to make him understand she would not be giving it up. “If I ever did sell the shirt, I’d only do it for charity,” she is quoted as saying. “But for now, I’m going to keep it on my back.” source: musicrooms.net |

A former UCLA School of Medicine researcher was sentenced to four months in federal prison for illegally snooping into the confidential private records of celebrities, high-profile patients and co-workers. 48 year old Huping Zhou pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles in January to four misdemeanor counts of violating federal privacy provisions. Zhou was also ordered to pay $2,000 in fines. Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony Montero said Zhou looked at the private medical records after being notified he was being fired for his job performance in 2003. “The nature and circumstances of this offense are quite egregious,” U.S. Magistrate Judge Andrew J. Wistrich said before imposing sentence. Zhou, who previously worked as a surgeon in his native China, was accused of accessing UCLA patient records more than 300 times, mostly involving celebrities, over a three-week period, Montero said. Those whose records he accessed include Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Tom Hanks, Sharon Osbourne, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Barbara Walters, Anne Rice, Elizabeth Banks and Leonardo DiCaprio, according to sentencing papers filed in Los Angeles federal court. He did not attempt to sell any of the information, Montero said. “His motive was to get back at UCLA,” the prosecutor said. Along with the prison term and fine, Wistrich ordered Zhou to serve one year of supervised release following his release from jail, at which time he must undergo mental health counseling. Zhou is a Chinese citizen in the U.S. on a work visa, but will not be deported because the violations were misdemeanors, Montero said. The sentence “sends a strong message that if you’re going to access patient records without a lawful reason, there will be definite jail time,” Montero said outside court. source: ktla.com |

In her film “Boys on the Side,” directed by Don Roos, the central themes were lesbianism and AIDS. “That film was 15 years ago, and it was not common for a high-profile actress to be in a wide-release movie about lesbians,” says Jarrett Barrios. “To be part of that, particularly on the real upswing of her early career, says something about Barrymore’s commitment and how fearless she is in her support of the gay and lesbian community.” In 2009, Barrymore essayed the role of a straight reporter at an LGBT newspaper in the film “He’s Just Not That Into You,” and in “Everybody’s Fine” she played the lesbian daughter of widower Robert De Niro. Barrymore is this year’s recipient of the Vanguard Award, which is given to people who have increased the visibility of the LGBT community. The actress says it is no big deal. “I was born, bred and raised amongst diversity,” Barrymore said. “It has defined me and made me the person I am today.” When California’s Prop. 8 came up for a vote in 2008, Barrymore took it personally as she joined the thousands of protesters in the streets of West Hollywood and Silverlake. “I am who I am because of the people who influenced me growing up, and many of them were gay,” Barrymore said. “No one has the right to tell anyone what makes a family … this is something that means everything to me.” source: variety.com |
